GoHighLevel Instagram DM Automation: What It Does, the Plan You Need, and Meta's Limits
GoHighLevel automates Instagram DMs with two workflow triggers — a comment on a post, or a reply to an open conversation — that fire a public reply and a private message with up to three buttons. Every paid plan starting at $97 a month includes this workflow builder, and whichever plan you pick, the private reply still has to follow Meta's rules: one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days, and nothing further unless the person writes back and opens a 24-hour window.
What does GoHighLevel do with Instagram DMs by default?
GoHighLevel connects an Instagram business account through its linked Facebook Page and then automates the conversation with workflows, not with a separate Instagram app. Two triggers start that automation, according to HighLevel's own support articles: Instagram - User comments on a post, which watches a specific post or reel for a keyword, and Customer Replied with the reply channel set to Instagram DM, which continues a thread the contact already opened. From there, a workflow can run the Respond on comment action — a public reply picked at random from a list you write, with an optional "like the comment" toggle — and the Instagram Interactive Messenger action, which sends the private message and lets you choose between "Reply to DM" (an existing conversation) or "Reply to comment via DM" (triggered straight from the comment).
That private message can carry up to three buttons — a website link, a phone call, or a jump to another step — with a default one-minute wait before the workflow falls through to whatever comes next, both documented in HighLevel's guide to Facebook and Instagram comment automation (last updated July 11, 2025). None of this replaces Instagram's own saved replies or away message, which work without connecting anything to GoHighLevel; what Instagram leaves out natively, and what still needs an API connection either way, is covered in this guide to Instagram auto-reply DMs.
Which GoHighLevel plan do you need, and what does it cost?
GoHighLevel's workflow builder, including the Instagram triggers and actions above, ships with every paid plan; its three tiers differ by sub-account count and resale options, not by which automations you can build. Checked on gohighlevel.com/pricing on October 21, 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Sub-accounts | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $97 | $970 | 3 | Core CRM, workflows, funnels, calendars; unlimited contacts and users |
| Unlimited | $297 | $2,970 | Unlimited | Adds unlimited sub-accounts and rebilling of usage costs at cost |
| Agency Pro | $497 | $4,970 | Unlimited | Adds SaaS mode, so you can rebill clients with a markup |
A single Instagram account for a single business sits comfortably on Starter, since contacts and users are unlimited on every tier and the Instagram workflow actions aren't gated to Unlimited or Agency Pro. GoHighLevel's pricing page lists a 14-day free trial with full access to the plan you pick, and warns that phone numbers, SMS, email sending, and AI usage are billed on top of the subscription even during that trial — Instagram messages themselves aren't in that usage-cost list. If you only need to automate Instagram and don't want a CRM, funnels, or a shared inbox for every channel, the cost comparison against a dedicated tool is in the ManyChat alternatives list, which charges by monthly active contacts instead of a flat subscription.
How does the comment-to-DM workflow work?
GoHighLevel's comment-to-DM workflow matches a keyword in a comment, replies publicly, and then sends the private message within the window Meta allows. Building it, step by step, per HighLevel's guide:
- Pick the trigger. Add "Instagram - User comments on a post" and choose the exact post or reel to watch, filtering by "contains phrase" or an exact match, with the option to catch only top-level comments.
- Reply in public. The "Respond on comment" action posts one of several pre-written replies, chosen at random, and can also like the comment.
- Send the private message. The Instagram Interactive Messenger action, set to "Reply to comment via DM," sends the DM with up to three buttons and a one-minute default wait before the next step.
- Decide how often it fires. The workflow can run once per contact or every time that person comments again.
Two requirements apply whatever keyword you use: the Instagram account has to stay connected through its linked Facebook Page, and — per HighLevel's separate Instagram DM workflow action article (updated October 9, 2026) — "a comment alone does not establish the standard 24-hour DM window," so any follow-up message after the first private reply still needs the contact to have written in. The mechanics of turning a comment into a DM with any tool, not only GoHighLevel's, are walked through in this guide to auto-replying to Instagram comments.
What limits does Meta's Instagram API put on this, whatever the tool?
Meta caps every private reply to a comment at one message, sent within 7 days of the comment, no matter which platform sends it. Meta's own documentation on Instagram private replies states it plainly: "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented," within that 7-day window (the one exception being Instagram Live, where the private reply only works during the broadcast itself). After that single message, the conversation only continues if the person replies — their reply is what opens the standard 24-hour messaging window, not the comment and not the private reply.
Two things follow from that, regardless of whether the workflow runs in GoHighLevel, HookReply, or anywhere else: a business can't send a second private reply to nudge someone who ignored the first one, and a new comment from someone who already has an open DM thread doesn't reset or extend that thread's 24-hour clock on its own — it still runs on the last message they sent.
When does it make sense to put HookReply in front of GoHighLevel?
Putting HookReply in front of GoHighLevel makes sense when Instagram comment-to-DM is the only automation you need and GoHighLevel's CRM, funnels, and calendars are more platform than the job calls for — while still wanting the contact to land in GoHighLevel because that's where the rest of the business runs. HookReply only automates Instagram: comment-to-DM with public replies chosen at random, DM keywords, story-reply and story-mention triggers, multi-step flows with buttons and quick replies, a follow gate before handing over a resource, and an AI chatbot and broadcasts to already-open chats from its Pro plan up. It has no CRM, no funnels, no email or SMS channel, no mobile app, and no native integrations beyond its own webhook.
HookReply is opening spots gradually through a waitlist; registration is closed for now and paid plans cannot be purchased yet.
Its published plans, taxes included: Free (0, 100 active contacts, 1 Instagram account, 3 automations, HookReply branding on messages), Essential ($12 a month or $10 billed yearly, 350 contacts, unlimited automations, no branding), Pro ($25, $20 yearly, 2,500 contacts, 3 accounts, AI replies and broadcasts), Business ($59, $47 yearly, 7,500 contacts, 10 accounts), and Agency ($119, $95 yearly, 25,000 contacts, unlimited accounts); a 14-day refund applies to every plan. Contacts are the total across every connected account on the user, and HookReply doesn't charge for contacts over the plan's cap: new contacts simply stop getting a reply until the next month or an upgrade, and there's a daily cap on automated sends. None of that replaces what GoHighLevel's own Instagram workflows already do inside a single subscription — it only matters once you'd rather pay by Instagram contacts than by a flat agency fee, or want chat features GoHighLevel's comment-to-DM action doesn't have, like an AI chatbot or a follow gate.
How do you send a HookReply contact into GoHighLevel?
HookReply sends a contact into GoHighLevel the same way it sends one anywhere else: a step configured to "notify another app" posts a JSON body to a URL, with a 5-second timeout and no retry if the request fails or times out. The body always has the same shape: { account, automation, step, contact: { ig_id, username, name, tags, fields } }, where contact.fields holds whatever custom data that flow collected, such as email or phone. Three ways to turn that POST into a GoHighLevel contact:
- GoHighLevel's Inbound Webhook trigger. Per HighLevel's Inbound Webhook trigger article, a workflow set to this trigger generates its own unique URL; paste that URL into HookReply's webhook step, and inside the workflow map
contact.username,contact.tags, and the fields you collected onto a Create/Update Contact action. The article doesn't name a plan restriction, and since GoHighLevel's tiers differ by sub-account count rather than by which workflow triggers are available, this works the same on Starter as on Agency Pro. - Make or Zapier. GoHighLevel's own app in Make, documented at make.com/en/help/app/highlevel, includes Create Contact and Update Contact modules once you register a custom app on the GoHighLevel Marketplace to connect it; on Zapier, GoHighLevel's native app is called LeadConnector, with an "Add/Update Contact" action that takes the same fields.
- n8n. The HighLevel node in n8n creates or updates contacts, tags, and opportunities directly against GoHighLevel's v2 API, so a Webhook node feeding a HighLevel node covers the same mapping without a third service in between.
Whichever route handles it, only the contact's data travels — not the conversation. The Instagram DM thread stays wherever it started: inside GoHighLevel's Conversations if GoHighLevel's own connected account sent it, or inside HookReply's inbox if HookReply did. And because the webhook step doesn't retry, a workflow that's paused or an endpoint that returns an error silently drops that one contact; HookReply still keeps the contact and its tags, so exporting the CSV from Contacts recovers anyone a failed webhook missed.

Does GoHighLevel reply to Instagram DMs automatically?
Yes, through workflows: a comment trigger or a "Customer Replied" trigger on the Instagram DM channel can run the Instagram Interactive Messenger action, which sends a private message with up to three buttons, according to HighLevel's support articles on comment automation and the Instagram DM workflow action.
What GoHighLevel plan do I need for Instagram DM automation?
Starter, at $97 a month, already includes the workflow builder and the Instagram triggers and actions; GoHighLevel's three paid tiers differ by the number of sub-accounts and reselling options, not by which automations are available, and contacts and users are unlimited on every tier.
Does GoHighLevel need a Facebook Page to automate Instagram?
Yes. HighLevel's guide to Facebook and Instagram comment automation requires the Instagram account to be connected through its linked Facebook Business Page before either the public-reply or the DM actions will run.
How many times can GoHighLevel send a private reply to the same comment?
Once. Meta's documentation on Instagram private replies limits every tool, GoHighLevel included, to a single private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of when the comment was posted.
Can GoHighLevel message someone who only commented but never sent a DM?
Only with that one private reply. HighLevel's own Instagram DM workflow action article states that "a comment alone does not establish the standard 24-hour DM window," so any further message needs the person to reply first.
Does GoHighLevel have a webhook trigger for contacts coming from another tool?
Yes, the Inbound Webhook trigger: a workflow set to that trigger gets a unique URL that any external app, including HookReply's "notify another app" step, can post a JSON contact to.
Is GoHighLevel free?
No. GoHighLevel has no free plan, only a 14-day trial with full access to the plan you choose; phone numbers, SMS, email sending, and AI usage are billed on top of the subscription, even during the trial, according to its pricing page.
Can HookReply send its Instagram contacts into GoHighLevel?
Yes, through its webhook step: HookReply posts the contact's Instagram ID, username, name, tags, and any fields it collected to a URL, which can be GoHighLevel's own Inbound Webhook trigger, or a Make, Zapier, or n8n flow that creates or updates the contact.
