How to Sell on Instagram Live Without Shopping Tags
To sell on Instagram Live today, you ask viewers to comment a keyword and send each one a private reply with your payment link while the broadcast is still running, because Meta removed product tagging from Instagram Live on March 16, 2023. The one message Instagram lets you send per comment on a Live video only goes out while that broadcast is on air, so this guide covers the setup, the prep, and what you can still do once you end it.
Can you still tag products in an Instagram Live?
No. Meta ended product tagging inside Instagram Live broadcasts on March 16, 2023, confirming the shutdown in a February 2023 announcement reported by TechCrunch, and the feature never came back. If a search result still tells you to tap "add products" before you go live, that button is gone.
What's left for someone watching to actually pay you:
- Say the link out loud or put it in your bio. It works on a handful of people, but it means leaving the Live, opening your profile, and hunting for the product. Most viewers won't bother.
- Ask people to DM you and reply once the Live ends. By then half of them have moved on, and if fifty people comment at once you can't keep up by hand.
- Ask for a keyword comment and let the private reply go out automatically, in seconds, while people are still watching. It's the only one of the three that scales — and the rest of this guide is about that one.
How does a keyword comment turn into a private reply?
A keyword comment works because Instagram's own Messaging API lets a business send one private reply to a Live comment — but Meta's own private replies documentation says that for Instagram Live, a private reply "can only be sent during the live broadcast," and once it ends that window closes for good.
- You say the keyword on camera: "Comment SOLD and I'll send you the link right now."
- Instagram notifies your comment-to-DM tool the moment someone writes it — the same channel it uses for comments on a regular post or reel.
- If the comment matches your keyword, one private message goes out automatically with the price and a button to your payment link. "sold!!", "SOLD 🙋♀️" and "I want this, SOLD" all count: the match looks for the whole word, not an exact sentence.
- If that person taps a button or messages back, the conversation opens for Meta's standard 24-hour messaging window, Live or not.
Two things are different from a regular post or reel. First, there's no public reply to a Live comment: Meta's own API reference states "you cannot reply to comments on a live video; use the Instagram Messaging API to send a private reply instead" — so the "check your DMs" part has to come out of your mouth, on camera, every time you see a run of keyword comments. Second, the allowed pace is much higher: Meta's rate-limiting documentation lists 100 private-reply calls per second per account for Live comments, against 750 calls per hour for posts and reels, so a sudden pile-up during a Live doesn't get throttled the way a viral post would.
How do you set up comment-to-DM before you go live?
HookReply treats a Live the same way it treats a post or reel: a Comment automation with a keyword and a private-reply step, built before you ever press "Go live."
- Create a Comment automation with your keyword (for example, SOLD) and the match set to "contains."
- Leave it open to every post instead of picking specific ones. The Live doesn't exist yet while you're building this, so there's nothing to select in a post picker. Turn the automation on right before you go live.
- Write a first message that stands on its own: what it is, the price, and up to three buttons. One opens your payment link, another ("Got a question?") just opens the conversation. Instagram allows only that one message per comment until the person replies, so don't spend it on a plain "hi." The general walkthrough for this trigger type is in auto-reply to Instagram comments.
- Tag that step, for example live-oct, so you can filter to just this Live's buyers afterward.
- Test it before you go live: turn it on against a normal post for a few minutes, comment from a second account, and check that the message and the link land correctly.
- Turn it off once you're done, or change the keyword. Because it's listening to every post, a SOLD comment on a month-old reel would trigger it too.

If someone messages you directly instead of commenting, a DM keyword works the same way; see auto-reply DMs for that version of the setup.
Which payment link do you actually send?
The DM needs a link a buyer can pay from in one tap, because Instagram still has no native checkout inside a Live broadcast.
- Stripe Payment Links. Stripe's own site describes it as a way to "sell online without needing a website… create a fully functional payment page in a few clicks and share the link" by email, text, or DM. Set one up per product once, and reuse the same link for every Live.
- Shopify. If you already run a Shopify store, a draft order's "Send invoice" button, or the Payment Links option under Settings → Payments, creates a one-off checkout link for an exact amount — paste that into the DM instead of a generic product page.
- PayPal.Me. A personal link such as paypal.me/yourname lets someone enter an amount and pay in seconds, no account search needed; PayPal describes sharing it "by email, SMS, chat, or even on a business card."
Whichever you use, put the full price — including shipping — in that first message. "Comment for the price" works against you once the DM already has the link; there's no reason left to hide it.
How do you prepare a Live built around a keyword?
- Schedule and announce it. Instagram lets you schedule a Live from the app so followers can set a reminder; post about it in Stories for a few days beforehand.
- Make the offer Live-only: a bundle, a bonus, or a counted number of units. If it's identical to what's already on your site, nobody has a reason to buy during the broadcast instead of later.
- Repeat the keyword. People drop in and out constantly. Say "comment SOLD" every few minutes and pin a comment with it at the top.
- Use one keyword per product if you're showing more than one — SOLDBLUE, SOLDBLACK — each with its own automation. A single keyword followed by a list of ten links converts worse.
- Test the automation first, from a second account, on a normal post.
- Answer sizing and material questions out loud. The first DM covers price and shipping; the Live itself is what answers everything else.
What happens to the comments once you end the Live?
Once you end the broadcast, Meta stops sending comment notifications and stops accepting private replies for it — even to someone who commented a second before you hung up — because, in Meta's own wording, a private reply for a Live "can only be sent during the live broadcast."
- Cutting it close means some people miss the DM. End with a buffer of a minute instead of stopping mid-sentence.
- A saved replay doesn't reliably inherit the automation. Meta's documentation doesn't spell out how comments on a saved Live video are handled, so don't count on it — put the link in the caption, or post a recap Reel with its own keyword.
- Anyone who tapped a button or messaged you keeps a 24-hour window from their last message — Meta's standard rule for everyone, not just Live viewers. HookReply's inbox shows how much of that window is left for each contact.
- Anyone who only commented and did nothing else can't receive another automatic message; you'll only hear from them if they write to you first.
For a last call to everyone tagged from this Live who's still inside that window — "down to the last 3, closing tonight" — a broadcast message covers the group, available on Pro and up. If you'd rather queue a follow-up for tomorrow than send one tonight, that's covered in scheduling Instagram DMs.
What limits should you plan around before you go live?
Selling through a Live automation runs into two sets of limits: Instagram's, and your own plan's.
- One private reply per comment, no public reply. Anything past that only happens once the person answers back.
- Your account has to be a professional (business or creator) account, and public. Meta doesn't send comment webhooks for a private account.
- Contacts are capped by plan, per month, across your whole account — not per Live. Past the cap, new commenters stop getting a reply until next month or until you upgrade; nobody gets billed for going over.
- HookReply also caps automatic sends per account per day, broadcasts included — a safeguard so one account's spike doesn't get the whole app rate-limited by Meta.
- It's Instagram-only: nothing goes out to WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, email, or SMS.
- If only a handful of people comment, skip the tooling and reply to them by hand once you're off air.
HookReply is opening spots gradually through a waitlist while its Instagram app waits on Meta's review; sign-ups are closed and paid plans can't be purchased yet.
Prices are in euros, taxes included, billed monthly:
| Plan | Price per month | Contacts per month | Last-call broadcasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | 100 | No |
| Essential (Esencial in the app) | €12 | 350 | No |
| Pro | €25 | 2,500 | Yes |
| Business | €59 | 7,500 | Yes |
| Agency | €119 | 25,000 | Yes |
Contacts are the total across every Instagram account on the user's plan, not per Live. The free plan includes 3 automations; paid plans have no automation limit, and AI replies start on Pro. Paying yearly brings Essential, Pro, Business, and Agency down to €10, €20, €47, and €95 a month.
Do you have to disclose a brand deal before selling live?
This is general information, not legal advice. If you're unsure whether a specific deal needs a disclosure, check the exact wording with a lawyer or the FTC's own guidance linked below.
If you're paid, or given free product, to feature someone else's brand during the Live, the FTC requires a disclosure of that connection, and spells out a Live-specific version of the rule: "if making an endorsement in a live stream, the disclosure should be repeated periodically so viewers who only see part of the stream will get the disclosure," according to the FTC's Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers. Saying it once at the start isn't enough, because people join a Live at every minute, not just the first one.
How to word that disclosure on Instagram specifically is in FTC disclosure on Instagram. Running a giveaway instead of a sale uses the same keyword-to-DM mechanic — what changes is the legal side (odds, eligibility, how you pick a winner), covered in Instagram giveaway rules in the US.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a Shop Now button back to my Instagram Live?
No. Meta removed product tagging from Instagram Live on March 16, 2023, and it hasn't returned. The keyword-comment-to-DM method in this guide is the closest working substitute.
What if way more people comment than I expect?
Meta allows up to 100 private-reply calls per second per account for Live comments, so a burst rarely gets throttled by Instagram itself. Your own plan's monthly contact cap is the more likely limit: past it, new commenters stop getting a reply until the next month or an upgrade.
Do I need my own website to sell on a Live?
No. A payment link from Stripe, Shopify, or PayPal.Me is enough on its own; it's what goes in the button of the private reply.
Can I message everyone who watched the Live, not just who commented?
No. The Instagram API doesn't expose a list of viewers, and it won't let you message someone who hasn't interacted with you. You can only reach people who commented (one message each, during the broadcast) and people already inside a 24-hour messaging window with you.
Which keyword should I use?
Anything short, easy to type with a thumb, and free of accents. If you already run another automation with the same keyword on your posts or reels, pick a different one for the Live, or that older automation wins and yours never fires.
Can I use this same setup for a giveaway instead of a sale?
Yes, for collecting entries: whoever comments the keyword gets the rules and a confirmation by DM. Everything else — eligibility, how you pick a winner, the prize — follows different rules, covered in Instagram giveaway rules in the US.
What does it cost to automate comment-to-DM for a Live?
HookReply's free plan covers testing with 100 contacts a month and 3 automations. For a Live with a bigger audience, Essential is €12 a month and Pro is €25, taxes included; broadcasts and AI replies start on Pro. No contract.
